Binary acids are named by adding the prefix hydro- to the stem of the central atom plus the suffix -ic acid (e.g., HCl is named hydrochloric acid). Ternary acids are named according to the following system:

Acid Name
HXO hypo- + stem + -ous acid
HXO2 stem + -ous acid
HXO3 stem + -ic acid
HXO4 per- + stem + -ic acid
HNO2, H2SO3, etc. stem + -ous acid
HNO3, H2SO4, etc. stem + -ic acid
