An anhydrous iron oxide Fe+3[Fe+2Fe+3]O4 which has an inverse spinel structure with the tetrahedral sites being occupied by Fe+3. It is intensely black in color and highly ferromagnetic. Some naturally occurring specimens are natural magnets, a property discovered by the Chinese and used to make the first lodestone compasses. Magnetite derives its dark color because of intervalence charge transfer. Magnetite found in nature can be used to date lava flows with the aid of paleomagnetism. Magnetite can be found in small quantities where the solid solution of ilmenite has occurred
