The absence of magnetic monopoles results in the Maxwell equation
(1)

where B is the magnetic field. As a result of the vector identity
(2)

the magnetic field can be given in terms of a so-called magnetic vector potential by
(3)

In cgs, the magnetic vector potential is given by the integral
(4)

where c is the speed of light and J is the current density. In MKS
(5)

Note that the magnetic vector potential can be nonzero in regions of zero magnetic field such as the exterior of an infinite solenoid! This apparent paradox was explained by the discovery of the Aharonov-Bohm effect.
