A type of telescope which uses hyperbolic primary and secondary mirrors. This gives a wide field of view and eliminates spherical aberration and coma. In 1927, Ritchey constructed the successful Ritchey-Chrétien telescope (a 0.5-meter) while working in France. After coming to the U.S., he subsequently began work on the first major such telescope in 1930, a 1-m for the U.S. Naval Observatory. This telescope was finished in 1934, and started life at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. The Ritchey-Chrétien design was also used for the Kitt Peak 4-meter Mayall telescope.
