The Newtonian telescope is the simplest of the reflecting telescopes. Its primary mirror is ideally paraboloidal in shape, and reflects light back up the scope axis to a smaller flat mirror which is tilted at 45 degrees to the axis. The beam then goes outside the optical tube to be focused by an eyepiece at 90 degrees to the scope axis. The secondary mirror is made small enough that the amount of light it blocks from reaching the primary mirror is negligible for most observing.
